Lynn in Fairy CostumeI had a load of homework this morning, especially when tomorrow night I must submit a paper for ‘the Wednesday Night class’. I went to the library to print out some things and the wierdest thing happened. A fairy stopped by to say hello. I was like… what the…?

It turned out to be my friend Lynn. It was about 9 am in the morning and she was already dressed up in a fairy costume! I was like… why are you already dressed up? and she gave me this ’so what? look’ take a look!

I was so tired but I was in no mood at all to get into a costume. Not that I was planning on doing so anyway. So I just bought 3 bags of Hershey’s chocolate on the way home. They were a special autumn edition in 4 different leaf pattern fall colored wrapping and 4 different nuts. Hmmm…

Then I went over to the Family Resource Center to pick up the orange sign that says “TRICK OR TREAT HERE!” Well, what do you know, the FRC were full of kids already! Take a look!

I also came across 3 little witches! Ooohhh I was terrified…

Daylight Saving Time has ended, adjust your clocks!

As of today, I’m not 12 hours away form home, but 13. From now on through this winter season, Stillwater and Yogyakarta (Indonesian Central Time) will be 13 hours different.

Homecoming Parade!

While all the wall decorations last night have gone to the recycling center (I hope), the whole community prepared for this morning’s Homecoming Parade. We were expected at our group’s location… if I were able to find it on the map… at exactly 7 am because the Parade will start at 9 am. That’s reasonable. That’s enough time to get everyone at the spot and distribute the flags. Unfortunately, the only fact I have seemed to ignore was that we were group #144 which means we will start walking when the first 113 groups have marched first! So, we didn’t start parading untill about 11 am. So, here’s what we did on our spare time… take pictures! Lot’s of it!

SAGA at Homecoming Parade

Awww weren’t we so colorful?! It was a quick parade, incomparable to the wait.I enjoyed the feeling of having so many people out on the streets watching us march with our international flags. I pictured myself 10 years ago. Oh was I reminiscing my days in the flag corps and marching band…

The Walk Around - Homecoming Eve

They say it’s a tradition and even America’s Greatest Homecoming. The Walk Around is an activity where the Stillwater community literally walk around the neighborhood to sight see structures that portray ‘cowboy football’ spirit. These structures range from a small 1 m cube dice into a 3 x 10 wall. If you look closer, these colorful decorations are actually made out of colorful tissue paper wrapped individually to fit into small gaps of metal mesh.

Wud’ja like ta walk around thru ma pictures?

Ramadhan Day 22

JAPANESE NIGHT!

      Konbanwa - Good Evening!

A Cappella - Love, Love, Love

A Cappella - “Love, Love, Love” Sung by Ken Hirai (he’s so cute!)

When I entered the Concert Hall, the Japanese students dressed in kimono painted my name in Japanese Kanji characters. Along the entrance, many more Japanese students greeted us with their smiles and their oh so bright and colorful kimonos (oh I want ooone!).

Ok, now here’s why I’d say this J-Night was spectacular…

ECO-OSU Recycling Site

Ramadhan Day 22

SEPARATING RECYCLED MATERIALS AT RECYCLING SITE

It puzzled me, how recycling sites need to be adopted. Doesn’t the city take care of the dumping? Apparetly not. Not all cities have the money or infrastructure to manage their waste. Even if they do have recycling sites, they are not always well maintained. Some people dump their recycling waste unseparated.

ECO-OSU's Adopted Recycling Site

It amazed me how different people of the community actually recycle! Starting from children, parents, young adults, men wearing cowboy hats, old men, and college students that you couldn’t have suspected cared about the environment! They all come down to the site even if only to trow two bags of used aluminium cans and beer bottles!

A young girl places used aluminium cans in the appropriate dumping bin An elderly man separates his recycled garbage A man in a cowboy hat trows away his used newspaper

A young lady disposes her cardboards Materials not considered recyclable need to be disposed as plain trash Do the cardboards need to be packed or are you just having fun jumping on them?

If we have this much awareness, why not have more recycling bins all over campus and the university appartments? I can assure you there would be more vehicle-less people recycling, if they didn’t have to come all the way to the lake to dispose them every week.

LABELLING STORM DRAINS

Is it necessary? Well, the city of Stillwater thinks so. We were given labels to glue on just the top of the storm drains to warn the community not to dump toxic waste into the drains. Dumping toxic waste into storm drains may cause poisoning of fish who live in the streams that these drains lead to and eventually poison the people who will ultimately eat these contaminated fish.

We hope this effort will bare fruitful results ;)

Ramadhan Day 21

The opening dance…

I really hoped Bu Sutiah would be proud of me if she saw me. I remembered the days we still practiced together. Now I must remember the moves myself. It was a challenge.

Dancing Golek Ayun-Ayun in front ofabout 300 4th grade students

This was a day I’ve longed for… to promote Indonesia to young children. It was an amazing experience, to see their jaws drop as I explained Indonesia had more than 17,000 islands; to observe their eyes glow as they saw me in my dance costume, to feel their eagerness to touch my head-hair decoration; to sense their excitement when they viewed more pictures of Indonesian landscapes. Children are such fascinations to me.

The girls were really interested in my dance costume that they just had to touch my hair-do The girls were all over my costume!

Introducing my country is an honor…

1st winter wool coat

Today, I’ve finally bought that wool coat that was advertised on the announcement board of the Student Union (a.k.a gelanggang mahasiswa) a few days back. Student price. Wah, jangan dikonversikan ke Rupiah. Nanti pusing, malah nggak jadi beli :D A real good deal for a wool coat I’d say!

How close does it resemble the one Jeon Ji-Hyun is wearing? :)

Jeon Ji Hyun's Winter Coat (cream)

The lower half is exactly the same style! Well, I have not worn it yet.

Wait till the snow comes, then you can compare!
