[Supposedly Indonesian Tourism Industry Expo Day 4]
The next morning, I turned on the national TV stations they did not have much scenes to cover. They say the roads are difficult to pass since rubbles from ruined houses and buildings have blocked most of the roads leading to the devastated areas. Yesterday, my family have visited my grandparents and my uncle in the south. They showed me the pictures and I called them again to see if they were alright. A friend from Imogiri (way down south) text messaged me that his grandmother passed away. I and some of my friends went down there to bring whatever logistic help we could afford and to see what actually happened. I was not in the mood to drive so I let my friend drive and I took pictures instead. Here are some of the scenes…

Day 3
INDONESIAN TOURISM INDUSTRY EXHIBITION
This morning about 5:30 am I was suddenly awakened by a text message on my cellphone from a friend in Jogja. The sms read: “Jogja just experienced an earthquake of a 5.9 Richter scale magnitude“. Aceh was hit by a 9.0 Rs earthquake in 2004. What does this mean? Surprized, shocked, confused, still slumbered, I hastened to use that phone in my hand to call home.
NO SIGNAL. Home phone. Papa’s cell. Mom’s cell. My brother’s cell. My grandparent’s phone. My Aunt’s phone. My cousin’s cell. NO ONE PICKED UP!!!
Could it be Merapi exploding? Unfortunately there was no TV in the hotel room.

Day 2
4th annual - INDONESIAN TOURISM INDUSTRY EXHIBITION
May 25-28 th, 2006 - Semanggi Expo Jakarta
Today’s batik dress was a bit more casual. I also didn’t have to put my hair up in a traditional bun, which would be tremendous work, believe me. Unless you were a professional dacer or wedding stylist (paes ageng).

Day 1
PAMERAN TERBESAR INDUSTRI PARIWISATA INDONESIA
Yang ke-4 kalinya 25 - 28 Mei 2006 Semanggi Expo, Jakarta
Today was my second time on duty as Diajeng Jogja to promote Yogyakarta City’s Tourism. It’s always an honor for me to do so. Though I can’t totally agree on everything that’s going on or how things are done in my city, I love Yogyakarta. It’s my city of birth and has been my longest hometown.

Andi was as excited or may be even more excited since he’s still got that young fresh spirit of an undergrad freshman. He has always been like my own little brother, thus we almost always get along together. Right Andi? LOL.
We both came early this morning with the rest of the Tourism Department staff, already dressed up in our traditional Javanese costumes. We prepared some brochures and ginger candy (permen jahe) for visitors who stop by our booth.

PDDJ was invited to the launch of the Playground for Taman Pintar, a soon to be science center for children in the heart of Yogyakarta, City of Education. The venue was open aired with umbrella roofs just above the dinner tables. It was a cool-breezed stary-sky evening untill rain stared pouring down on us!

Paguyuban Dimas Diajeng Jogja
We were concerned about the wellbeing of the children in the refugee barraks. Those kids must have been very bored and under a lot of stress, not being at in their own home. Paguyuban Dimas Diajeng Jogja had to act fast to help relieve their boredom and cheer them up, so we paid them a visit.

More pictures!

Day 2
.jpg)
We had to be up early today for we had to travel about 2 hours from Padang City to Sawahlunto, where the meeting was being held. The bus ride was definately worth it. The view was a soul cleanser! It washed away any ache and anger within me that morning.
Sawahlunto is a city surrounded by many lushious green pine tree covered hills. In the day time, I’d picture the city with all the red, brown, and black gadang house roof tops as being the soup inside a green bowl. It was just so absolutely beautiful. It was pretty chilly that morning. Fogs started coming down hill and covering our view. Bad visibility. Come to think of it, the hills reminded me of those in Shaneandoah National Park in Virginia.

Day 1
Wow! Today, I’ve finaly stepped foot on the island of Sumatera. The second main island of Indonesia that I’ve ever been to, other than Java. I’ve been to smaller islands such as Karimunjawa, Bali, and Flores Timur, but never Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Irian Jaya, and Sumatera.
What a relief to finally reach the west end!
At the Minangkabau International Airport, shaped like a gadang house, we were welcomed by the Uda Uni Sumatera Barat. They asked each guest to tare a piece of Piper bettle leaf as a sign that were welcomed here. Aww, how interresting?! I was beginning to like the place already!
I came here to attend a national meeting of Young Tourist Ambassadors (duta wisata) from all over the country. I was so excited since it was my first duty out of town as a Diajeng Jogja. Well, we’ll see what happends tomorrow!
That night at the Governor’s Dinner…
